FAQs

IMPORTANT INFO

Aerial yoga uses a hammock or sling as a prop. This extra support allows us to bring more awareness to our breath and our movements. Aerial yoga allows for certain yoga postures to be accessible that may not be possible with just a yoga mat (e.g. inversions, learning to pull yourself up). Aerial yoga is a combination of traditional yoga, pilates, and an adaptation of TRX.

Aerial arts are the practice of performing acrobatics using the hammock, sling, or lyra as an apparatus to perform tricks or dance routines. Aerial arts practices are inspired by dance, gymnastics, acrobatics, and the circus arts.

If you are brand new to aerial yoga you must start with an Aerial Yoga Foundations workshop or by scheduling a private class. This is for your safety and comfort level when you attend other classes on the schedule. You will then be familiar using the aerial hammock as a yoga prop; including terminology, wrist wraps, hammock placement, inversions, and safety practices. Please visit the “Workshops” tab for Aerial Yoga Foundations workshop dates/times and to sign up.

Classes such as Aerial Yoga Gentle and Aerial Yoga Strength and Tone are at a slower pace or the hammock is at a lower setting—an Aerial Yoga Foundations workshop is not required for these classes but still suggested. However, if you’d like to attend an Aerial Yoga Flow, Aerial Yoga Core, or Aerial Yoga Core/Flow classes you are required to take the Aerial Yoga Foundations workshop.

Once you have completed the Aerial Yoga Foundations workshop you will have access to all the classes on the schedule.

Please email us if our workshop days/times are not possible with your schedule so that we can make arrangements for you.

Once you have completed the Aerial Yoga Foundations workshop and have a desire to learn tricks, flips, and dance with the hammock you are required to start with our Aerial Arts (Hammock) Foundations 4 week series which includes Hang 101, Climb & Press 102, Wraps 103, and Flips 104.  These Aerial Arts Foundations Classes are meant to be taken in order (e.g. 101, 102, 103, 104) to build on what was learned in the previous class. You must complete 101 before moving to 102 and so on. Please visit the “Workshops” tab for Aerial Arts Hammock Foundations workshop dates/times and to sign up.

Once you’ve completed the 4 week series you may continue on to Hammock Flips, Tricks, and Transitions Level 1 at the teacher’s discretion.

Please email us if our workshop days/times are not possible with your schedule so that we can make arrangements for you.

Flying Buddha offers classes and workshops that cater to kids ages 6 to 11 and older. We recommend starting with a Aerial Kids Foundations workshop where we will introduce (or remind) students how to properly and safely use the aerial hammock to get their practice going! We will go over basic wraps, hangs and shapes, preparing them for other classes and workshops on the schedule.

Start with a Lyra Foundations workshop or by scheduling a private class. This is for your safety and comfort level when you attend other classes on the schedule. You will then be familiar with using the lyra; beginner-friendly poses, transitions and shapes, low flow on the bottom of the Lyra, and lyra-specific safety practices. Please visit the “Workshops” tab for workshop dates/times and to sign up.

Once you have completed the Lyra Foundations workshop you will have access to Lyra Level 1 and Tweens Lyra classes. If you’re ready to learn more intermediate/advanced lyra concepts your path will be Lyra Foundations > Lyra Level 1 > Lyra Level 1 / 2 > Lyra Level 2.

Our Pole Foundations workshops are the perfect place to start if you are new to pole fitness. Students learn the basics of pole, proper technique and queuing, and safety practices for spins and transitions on the pole. Once you’ve completed Pole Foundations you are welcome to attend other beginner workshops and classes on the schedule.

Any yoga wall on the schedule is okay to start with if you are new to this type of yoga practice. Our experienced teachers structure the class to accommodate each skill level; offering different options for each pose.

Bungee is a form of resistance training so it’s low impact on your joints but it’s cardio intensive—so be prepared to sweat! The apparatus requires a pack of bungee cords and a harness worn around the hips and waist to support a person while they move their body into various shapes and practice creative movements from leaping, bouncing, to lunges, push-ups, squats, handstands,  and jumps. The harnesses are designed to accommodate a wide variety of body types and are fitted by an instructor at the beginning of class. This cardiovascular workout will build coordination, strength, and endurance all while toning your body!

Start with our Bungee Buddha Foundations workshop! This is an all levels class where you will become familiar with the equipment and how to properly engage the body while moving with the bungee. If you have any injuries or health concerns the best approach would be an individual private bungee session tailored to your specific needs. Please visit the “Workshops” tab for Bungee Buddha Foundations workshop dates/times and to sign up.

Whatever you feel comfortable in! For aerial classes we suggest wearing a form-fitting shirt that covers your underarms and form-fitting pants that cover your knees.

For pole classes, beginners can wear long leggings; 3/4 leggings are also nice so you have a little skin to grip. You can also feel free to wear knee socks, and/or knee pads for floorwork. You should not wear any lotion on your hands and legs. Sweating will release the lotion back to the surface and you will be sliding off the pole.

Be sure you have a safe place for your rings, bracelets, and valuables!

If you have a yoga mat, please bring it to your aerial or mat yoga class (no need for pole fitness classes).

We do have a limited number of yoga mats available for rent at the studio for $3.00. We also have durable, high quality, and machine washable mats for purchase.

To cover the costs of properly sanitizing our hammocks after each use we offer either a hammock rental for $10 or the option to purchase your own hammock (payment plans are available). If you are bringing your own hammock that was not purchased at our studio please let your instructor know so they can evaluate the equipment for safety. Only climbing grade equipment may be used in our studio.

There is San Pellegrino available for purchase in the studio and a water dispenser in the studio. Otherwise please bring your own water bottle or you can purchase one from us!

We offer classes for kids ages 6 -11 and older. We recommend that a caregiver or parent attend the class for 15 minutes for kids ages 6-10 to ensure they have someone to accompany them to the bathroom and to make sure they are safely sized for their hammock. For kids age 11 and older, no parent or caregiver needs to be present. For kids of any age, no previous experience is necessary!

Yes! You will need to purchase a free standing rig or find a contractor who can safely rig your hammock according to your specific needs. We are happy to share what we know about this process. For home practice or custom hammock lengths outside of the studio please email us your ceiling/rig height and color preference for your hammock. We can then have a hammock and any additional equipment (i.e. carabiners) prepared and shipped to you. Contact us for more information or to hear about payment plan options.

You can attend our workshops and classes, spread the word, purchase a gift card or two, or buy merch! We have comfy and functional Flying Buddha merchandise (t-shirts, tanks, hoodies, joggers, water bottles) available for purchase. You can also start a home aerial practice and give yourself permission to play along with us! Contact us for more information.
